Corrupted Knight - The Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia

I have for you today the second piece of a much larger personal project. On Monday, I shared with you the first piece, the Gray Wanderer, and it was received very well. Like the Gray Wanderer, I finished this up a while back and am just now sharing it. This piece was finished just before Illuxcon and went home with another artist (seeing a trend). I present you with the Corrupted Knight...

Here are all the other completed monsters for The Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia: Aberrant Stilter, Belled Kreep, Corrupted Knight, Dight-Kin, Eau-de-nil Elder, Ethra VanDalia, Footman, Gray Wanderer, Gullet, Humgruffin Mother, Irritated Girasol, Judicator, Kiplorbic Animal Dealer, Lammergeier Transport, Myopic Riflemen, Nimsbane Curse Victim, Ophiomornous Bureaucrat, Petrous Blacksmith, Quincaillerie, Saint Marque, Smokestack, Thrice, Uncanny Scribe, Virulent Artificer, Xandrell Tree, Yote Arms Dealer, and Zombic Spore.

Further details on this piece, like all of these personal monsters on toned paper, will have to wait for another day and, hopefully, a different type of information interface. Fear naught, for all will be revealed in the fullness of time. As an added bonus, here are some images of the piece as I worked on it.

Gray Wanderer - The Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia

I am a little behind in sharing some of my personal work here on the blog. With all the client work and related content, I have to wait to post my personal work, and sometimes it takes a back seat. Let's see if I can remedy that!

Here is the first piece of a larger personal project I am currently working on. You may remember seeing process images of this a few months back. This piece was done before Gen Con and went home with a fellow artist at Gen Con. I present you with the Gray Wanderer...

I have spoken a little about this piece, but to be to the point, it started as a mixing of Cthulhu and Norse mythos, but it is really a lot more. In the fullness of time, I hope to share where I am going with these drawings. I will leave it at that for now. There will be plenty of time and better places to go into detail. As an added bonus, here are some images of the piece as I worked on it...

Pusbubble - Blood Bowl: Fowl Play - PROCESS

Finishing off a week of traditional painting posts on the blog today with the process that went into Pusbubble! You might remember Pusbubble from back in June when I first shared him with you. Pusbubble is from the Foul Play expansion for Blood Bowl and was my first traditionally painted piece for Fantasy Flight Games. Here is a look at the final before we get into the process...

Pusbubble was described as a very small, very excited Nurgling that wore homemade gear and armor and just wanted to be part of the game. Oh, and he needed to be dripping with goo and filth, killing everything around it. I started things off with some thumbnails as I got my head around this cute little guy...

Option 'C' was the winner. Looking back now, it seems like a no brainer, but at the time, I was really up in the air on which was my preferred thumbnail. There may have been some mention in the assignment about the ball being a little too big to carry, or Pusbubble was having trouble lifting it I think 'C' better conveys that. Now that I had a thumbnail, it was time to work up the final drawing...

The drawing was approved without comment. You might notice that the aspect ratio changed from the thumbnail to the drawing. I wanted to paint on a standard sized board, so I extended the background horizontally to allow me to work on an 8 x 10 surface. With that squared away, it was time to paint. Here some images of the piece coming together...

I was (am) still figuring out this traditional painting stuff. In Pusbubble, especially, there was a lot of experimentation and just trying things out to see if it would work. I was also trying some new media and different types of combinations of media. Some of the experiments have led to processes I continue today while others have been abandoned. Still very much learning and figuring this all out on this piece. Here is a little animated process progression thing that better shows the piece coming together...

Pusbubble was the first of what has lead to many more, but more on that later. Here again, is the final painting and the corresponding card that this piece was created for...

Self Portrait 1: Pucker Up

On Monday I shared with you a traditional painting from back in January, the Uber Grotesque, today I have for you something a little more recent. This piece was completed early October and should better show what my current traditional work looks like and how much it has changed since January. Here is the first of a series of self portraits I am working on...

Uber Grotesque - Warhammer 40K Conquest: The Howl of Blackmane

At the end of last week I noticed a new piece of my work has popped up on the internet. This means I can now share it with you! This is a piece done for the first expansion for Warhammer 40K - Conquest, The Howl of Blackmane. I created this back in January and it is the second piece that I created traditionally for Fantasy Flight Games. Before I go too much into this piece, here is now the final turned out...

A lot has happened and changed with my traditional work since January. So it is a little weird to be showing this off now while I know what the future holds. Enough about that for now!

I will go into more detail about this piece when I share the process in the near future when the expansion is officially released. For now though I will show how the piece ultimately turned out. While I did this piece traditionally there was sizable modification requested for this piece once I had completed the painting that required a digital fix. Here is how the final modified piece turned out that was used in the game...

As I said, I will be going into more detail about this piece and the process that went into creating it here on the blog once the card is officially released. In the meantime, here is a small watermarked look at what the final card will look like...
